Enlisting in the Regular army in 1912, he was commissioned second lieutenant of Infantry in 1917 serving in all grades up to and including colonel and retiring in 1946 after more than 30 years of active service. Col. Jones' military assignments included: Hawaii; the Philippines; South America; Canada; Fort Douglas; UT; Camp Jordan, Seattle, WA; Aruba; Camp Claiborne, LA; Fort Francis Warren, Cheyenne, WY; and Champaine, IL. Col. Jones was awarded the Army Legion of Merit for outstanding service in World War II.
His survivors included his wife, Mrs. Mary Harvey Charles Jones; daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Hine, Berlin Heights, Ohio and Mrs. Julia Reber, Davenport, Iowa; son, Edward Ellis Jones; brother, Colonel Robert E. Jones, Palo Alto, Califoria; sister, Mrs. Roger B. Harris, Chestertown and grandchildren, Mrs. Virginia Hine Ely; Daniel Light Hine, Jr.; William Clark Hine and Judith Julia Hull Reber.
Gradeside services, with full military honors were held at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.
