On May 5, 1883 Chester S. Jones died of typhoid fever at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Chester was only 20 years old. The obituary in a local paper read in part:
"...Mr. Chester S. Jones, one of our most exemplary young men. He was learning the trade of machinist in Boston, and was greatly beloved by his shop mates and all who came into contact with him. His brother, Mr. Leslie F. Jones, went to Boston Monday morning to accompany the remains home..."
The funeral was held from the family home of his widowed mother, Deborah Lewis Jones, at her white house on the north side of the highway on the southeastern shore of Coggin's Pond in Barnstable Village.
