Race Horse. In 1978 he became the 11th horse to win horseracing's Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes races). A three-year old ridden by jockey Steve Cauthen that year, whose three races and other encounters that year in essence a rivalry with another top horse of the day, Alydar. Affirm captured the Derby by a length and a half, the Preakness by a neck and the Belmont by a head. Although Alydar lessened the margin of victory with each race, he became the first horse in history to place second in all three races. Affirmed won 22 times in 29 starts, was the champion 2 year old in 1977, and was voted Horse of the Year in 1978 and 1979, with winnings exceeding $2 million dollars. He began what would be his final year as a 4-year old by winning his final seven races, including the Santa Anita Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup, Woodward and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He ended up as a stud at Calumet farm living beside his arch rival Alydar. When the historic farm began experiencing financial trouble he was sold to Jonabell Farm in Kentucky, where he resided until his death at age twenty six. (bio by: Donald Greyfield (inactive))
