Betty June Herron Metcalf was born Feb. 14, 1932, in Overton and passed away Aug. 11, 2011, in Tyler. She lived in Winona for more than 60 years. As a beloved mother, grandmother and friend not only to her family but everyone she met, her legacy will live on forever. The lives that she had touched in the community go beyond measure. She loved her family, flowers and the outdoors. Her most precious moments were spent surrounded by family and friends. Her abounding faith in Jesus Christ was a testimony to all.
She was employed by the Winona Independent School District and Greenberg Smoked Turkeys before going to work at Carrier (United Technologies) where she retired in 1998. She was a member of Cross Brand Cowboy Church. A few of her hobbies that brought great enjoyment to her life were riding on the local trail rides as well as participating in the Great Texas Hand-off.
Survivors are sons and daughters-in-law, Sandy and Janet Metcalf of Winona, J.N. and Ginger Metcalf of Tyler, Ruben and Sherry Metcalf of San Angelo; daughters and sons-in-law, Sissie and Charles Patrick of Quitman, Rosie and Kenneth Langley of Red Springs, Venita and Richard Peacock of Flint; sister, Frances Hall of Alvin; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dollie Herron of New Chapel Hill, Marcellyn Herron of Lawn, Mary Nell Minyard of Winona; brother-in-law, J.C. Medlin of East Mountain; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Ms. Metcalf was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, James N. "Buddy" Metcalf; father and mother, Forrest and Tennie Herron; brothers, F.M., George, and James Herron; sisters, Inez Madigan, Ida Bruton, Lucille Nunnelee, Juanita Herron; and grandson, Matt Patton Metcalf.
Pallbearers are grandsons Chad and Josh Metcalf, Wesley and Kindle Patrick, Jared and Justin Metcalf, Curtis Langley and Corey Henderson. Honorary pallbearers are nephews and close friends.
Services will be at Cross Brand Cowboy Church, Tyler, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, with Pastors Mike Morrow and Ruben Metcalf officiating. Interment will be in Sand Flat Cemetery following the funeral service.
Donations may be made to the Hospice of East Texas Foundation or Cross Brand Cowboy Church.
