Boxing was Ray's lifelong love. Beginning his career at age 10, Ray won 56 of 60 amateur fights, capturing the California State A.A.U. Championship, the Pacific Coast Diamond Belt Championship, and the Golden Gloves Championship. Ray's professional career spanned seven years. He was ranked among the top 5 lightweights in the world and won the California Lightweight Championship. Ray fought two world champions, beating Richie Lemos and losing to Chalky Wright in non-title bouts. At its peak, Ray's career ended abruptly with a call to military duty. He finished with a record of 37-4-3. Ray served his country for three years during WWII, first stationed on Treasure Island as a boxing instructor and then aboard the USS Carson City in the South Pacific. After the war, he began a 25-year career as the Stanford University boxing coach (1947-1972). In 1950, Ray returned to military duty for one year during the Korean conflict. He later worked for Colma Drayage as a sales representative from 1972 to 1989. Ray was a member of the United States Boxing Committee, and was inducted into the California Old-timers Boxing Hall of Fame, as well as the prestigious World Boxing Hall of Fame.
