Actor. After attending Northwestern University, he marked his Broadway debut with the play "Strange Fruit" (1945 to 1946) and followed it with "Cyrano de Bergerac" (1946 to 1947). Meeker would inherit the role of Stanley Kowalski (from Marlon Brando) in the stage production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1947 to 1949) and originate the part of Hal Carter in the play "Picnic" (1953 to 1954). He launched his Hollywood career with the 1951 picture "Four in a Jeep" and appeared regularly in both films and TV. He had memorable roles in the pictures "Teresa" (1951), "Kiss Me Deadly" (1955, as Mike Hammer) and as the condemned Corporal Paris in Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" (1957). Further film credits include "Something Wild" (1961), "The Dirty Dozen" (1967), "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre" (1967), "The Detective" (1968) and "I Walk the Line" (1970). Meeker had a featured role in the TV series "Not For Hire" (1959 to 1960). (bio by: C.S.)
