Ada J. Ballard Shannon was the daughter of John Drake Ballard and Emily Hannah Everhart. She married William Shannon on Sept. 5, 1882 in Webster City, Iowa.

Webster City Tribune
November 16, 1888

Died Near Cody, Neb., Sept. 24th, 1888, Mrs. Ada Shannon, wife of William Shannon, aged 24 years, 1 month and 8 days. Mrs. Shannon is the daughter of J.D. Ballard, formerly of Hamilton County. She spent her childhood and grew to womanhood among her many friends at this place. Some time after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Shannon removed to Nebraska, where they have since resided. She there became the victim of the great life-destroyer, consumption, and died Sept. 24th. At her request, her remains were transmitted to Stratford and interred at Oakwood cemetery. It was with great sorrow and deep regret her many friends received the sad intelligence of the death of one so loved and esteemed. In consequence, a long line of friends followed her to her last resting place, and there they laid her quietly to rest almost in view of her childhood home, where sounds she once loved to hear might float around her with their usual sweetness. The familiar babble of the brook, the merry warble of the song of birds, and where the old school bell, to whose call she had so often responded, might send his familiar echoes over that little mound of earth. "Twas there beneath the mild September skies, the tall old oaks received her 'neath their canopy of crimson and gold." We tender our deepest sympathy to hose hearts so sadly bereaved that have so lately witnessed life's bitterest moment - the parting time. And yet, it is a consoling thought that enters the heart of the sorrowing. Parted, only to meet again, where no sepulchral shadow ever falls and no longer gleams the snowy spire of the Silent City.

"And then we think of one, who in her youthful beauty died,
The fair meek blossom that grew up and faded by my side.
In the cold moist earth we laid her, when the forest cast the leaf,
And we wept that one so lovely, should have a life so brief."
