Miss Emma Gaskill died at the home of her brother, Geo. G. Gaskill on Monday, May 18, after a severe illness from cancer of the stomach. The deceased was born at Owego, New York, Oct. 29, 1855, and at the age of one year, came to Wisconsin with her parents and made her home in Argyle from that time until her death with the exception of a short time when the family was back in the east.
When The Atlas editor as a young lad was left motherless, she, an older sister, became mother and sister all one. Together we faced trials and privations, and met the seamy side of a busy world. We were never separated for any length of time nor great distances, and when the writer became editor of this paper she began working in the office and continued in that employment until a little more than a year ago, when she was stricken with the disease that finally caused her death. An operation in June prolonged her life a few months but her latter days were attended with much suffering.
Her only sister, Mr. J.J. Uren died on the 27th of February of the present year. This leaves the writer the last of a family and doubly bereaved within a few short weeks.
She is survived by nephews, nieces and cousins who hold her in affectionate remembrance. She had been a member of the Methodist church for many years and led a quiet simple life. Funeral Thursday with services at the home and at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. J.H. Parker, with burial in the family lot in the old cemetery.
