|Birth: ||Nov. 28, 1897|
South Carolina, USA
|Death: ||Dec. 3, 1946|
Son of Henderson Ragsdell & Frances Steeles; grandparents unknown. All born in Rock Hill, South Carolina; county not identified.
Married Mrs. Sarah (Crawford) Dunn.
Laborer, building trade, (note: age questionable), died of carcinoma of liver. Death Certificate # 71849, informant: Sarah Ragsdell, 2573 East 59th Street, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH. Residence: same.
September 21, 2012 note from Thucydides, "In Sallie Dunn's marriage record in Cleveland in November 1918, she was listed as being married once before, previous husband deceased. I searched the death records again, and found Lucius Dunn, who died in June 1918 in Cleveland. His residence on the death cert was the same as the address for Sallie Dunn and George Ragsdell when they married in November 1918.
In 1920, George and Sallie Ragsdell were living in Cleveland, with daughter Pinkie E D (D for Dunn, I suppose) and Eddie W. Ragsdell. I found Edward Dunn's death cert (1936) and his parents names were given as George Ragsdell and Sarah Crawford. Some time between 1920 and 1930 Edward dropped "Ragsdell" and used his birth name again. I found Edward buried at Harvard Grove, in the burial index for that cemetery. The cemetery on the death cert is "Cleveland Cemetery", but he died at the Mansfield Reformatory Hospital (as an inmate) of tuberculosis.
My guess is that George and Sarah Ragsdell separated sometime between 1920 and 1930. In 1930, Sarah is living without George but with her two children Pinkie and Edward Dunn. Between 1925 and 1942, I found George and Sarah living at different addresses, though I could not find George in the 1930 census. In 1940, she is living only with her two children (and a lodger), and George is living elsewhere in the same census year.
On the WWII draft card, their address was the same, but I cannot account for this, unless George was already sick and needed help. I also cannot account for the different birth locations for George listed on his marriage register entry and WWII draft card (Maryland) vs. the 1940 census and death cert (South Carolina). My guess for the latter two is that someone else reported the birth location to the census taker, and of course, on the death cert, the informer is not the person whose information is on the cert.
I do believe he was older than Sarah/Sallie since his age varies in the records between 1920-1942. In 1918 he declared his age as 37 (1881) and in 1920 he declared it as 38 (1882). In 1940, he said 56 (1884) and in 1942 he gave his birth date as November 28, 1886. I am not sure which year is correct, but Nov 28 must be right since he said it and also Sarah gave that date on his death cert.
April 30, 2013, note from Chris, "I just wanted to give you an update about George Ragsdell. I found him listed at Harvard Grove under Bagsdell, which appears to be the cemetery clerk's transcription error from the death certificate."
July 24, 2013 note from Thucydides, "I searched the stated plot or section and could not find the grave. Most of the markers in Section 19 are buried under dirt and overgrown grass." I appreciate the time & effort. To keep another from duplicating the search, Find A Grave removed the photo request.
