MARY HERSHMAN was the daughter of Jacob and Sarah Hershman. She was the youngest of nine children, born November 20, 1832 in Ohio, probably in the area around Muskingum. She traveled with her family from Ohio to Indiana, Iowa, and the Kansas Territory. The census record for 1860 indicates that Charles Strong shared the residence with Mary and her parents while they were living in Shannon, Atchison County in the Kansas territory. Charles Strong and Mary Hershman were married on April 9th, 1861. They moved to Brownville, Nebraska where they had five children: Fremont, Florence, Mary Francis, William Riley, and Gertrude Parthenia Strong. After the death of her husband in 1882, Mary Strong continued the job of raising their family. In her later years, she made her home with the family of her oldest daughter, Mary Francis (Strong) Watson. She moved with Mary Francis and her family to Lincoln, Nebraska. Mary Strong died in Lincoln at the age of 75 on January 21, 1909.
