In the 1890 U. S. Census, George P. B. Campbell was listed as living in Township 32, Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, and as having served as a Private in Company H of the 25th Wisconsin Infantry, from 11 Aug., 1862 to 9 June, 1865, for total service of 2 years, 9 months and 27 days.

In the 1910 U.S. Census, Geo. Campbell was listed as 74 years of age and living on his own income in the 1st Ward, City of Chetek, Barron County, Wisconsin, with his 50 year old wife Sarah L. Campbell and their two children, Orlie R. Campbell, a 21 year old laborer in a livery stable and 13 year old Oliver P. Campbell. George was a Civil War veteran who enlisted August 11, 1862 at Potosi, Grant County, Wisconsin, to serve three years as a Private in the 25th Wisconsin. On September 14, 1862, he was mustered into Federal service with Company H at La Crosse, Wisconsin. On June 9, 1863, he was placed on detached service with the Pioneer Corps (Engineers) and while serving with them became sick and was hospitalized at Gayoso U.S.A. General Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The Muster Rolls of that hospital revealed that he was a patient on the Muster Rolls of Jul/Aug. 1863 to Nov/Dec. 1863. He was subsequently transferred to Adams US General Hospital in Memphis, and returned to duty May 7, 1864. The Muster Roll of his company for Mar/Apr 1865, noted that he was absent sick since August 1864 at Gayoso U.S.A. Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Since he was not present, he was not given a discharge by his company. It is not known when he was released from the Harvey U.S. General Hospital, but he was not given a discharge, and returned to Potosi, Wisconsin.
