Florence Kate Upton
Birth: Feb. 22, 1873
Death: Oct. 16, 1922

Artist, Illustrator. Her inscription reads : "In loving memory of Florence K. Upton, of New York and Westminster, who entered the Higher Life Oct. 16 1922. In his gracious keeping. Of rare attainment as a Painter, she was possessed also of a gift of Fantasy and created the Character of the Golliwogg to the unfailing delight of generations of children." Although Florence Upton was born in New York, both of her parents were English. Her father died in 1889 and, four years later, lack of funds forced her mother to bring her four children back to London. Whilst staying with her grandmother in Fellows Road, Hampstead, Florence decided to write a children's story. She found five wooden Dutch dolls in the attic, along with a black American doll, which she named the Golliwogg (note the two letter "g"s) and who was the hero of the story. Her mother, Bertha, wrote the text and Florence drew the pictures. The book, and its sequels, were very successful, although Florence did not patent the Golliwogg. In 1917, the dolls were sold at an auction at Christie's, along with 350 of Florence's drawings, and raised enough money to buy and equip an ambulance which went to the Front in France. Florence Upton exhibited at the Salon and the Royal Academy, and was acclaimed for her portraits ; indeed, her obituary in "The Times" described her as "first a painter and second a children's book illustrator".  (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
