Served in the Civil War first as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Iowa Volunteer Infantry, then as a Major and Assisstant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Francis J. Herron, then as the Assisstant Mustering Officer for the Western Division of Pennsylvania.
