Eleanor Dixie Rothrock Gilchrist Obituary
Eleanor Dixie Rothrock Gilchrist passed away peacefully in Santa Fe, N.M., on June 9, 2011, after a full life of 94 years. According to her wishes, Mrs. Gilchrist was returned to Gadsden, Ala., where her funeral will be held Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Collier-Butler Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Van Foreman of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection officiating. Burial will follow in Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services directing.
In 1915, Mrs. Gilchrist's parents, with their seven children, moved to Attalla, Ala., from Lock Haven, Pa. To commemorate their new life in Alabama, they named their baby girl, born in August the following year, Dixie. And throughout her long life, Dixie exemplified those special qualities of Southern charm that are so closely associated with her name. She was always proud of her Alabama heritage.
Dixie attended Attalla Grammar School and graduated from Etowah County High School in 1934. It was while she was employed at the local Five and Dime that she met her future husband, Colley Gilchrist, on a blind date. A few months later they eloped. They were married in Birmingham on March 12, 1937, and thus began their lifelong adventure together. Colley would often reminisce about how he "found a million dollar baby in a five and ten cent store."
Dixie traveled extensively and moved frequently during her husband's long and successful career with Goodyear, including stints in Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Ohio, Illinois and Luxembourg, Europe. But their hearts remained always in Alabama. In 1976, they retired to their farm near Ashville, not far from the Gilchrist homestead where Colley was born and raised. After her husband's death in 1985, Dixie moved to Gulf Shores, and then to Santa Fe in 1996.
A nationally ranked Bridge Master, Dixie enjoyed playing duplicate bridge well into her 80s. In mid-life, she took up the game of golf, once scoring a hole-in-one on the Goodyear golf course. Dixie was a dedicated Red Cross volunteer and active in numerous civic organizations. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother whose greatest pleasure was her family and friends. Her positive outlook and gracious manner endeared her to all.
Preceding her in death were her parents, James Herbert and Eliza Jane Heltman Rothrock; her brothers, Huling Harvey, Edward Heltman, James Herbert and Belleville Watson "Bub" Rothrock; her sisters, Lydia Beard, Margaret Rothrock, Jane Moses, Louise Harp and Imogene Rothrock; her husband, Colley Wyatt Gilchrist; and son, Kenneth Wyatt Gilchrist.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Gilchrist, of Santa Fe, N.M.; grandchildren, Eleanor Jane "Jamie" Gilchrist (Gordon "Bo" Turner), John Lawrence Sullivan (Andra Basu), Matthew Colley Sullivan (Kelley) and Peter Marston Sullivan; great-grandchildren, Trey and Elizabeth Turner, Cynthia and Niva Basu Sullivan and John Colley Sullivan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
