SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, Tenn. - "He fought the fight and kept the faith. Now he has gone to receive the crown of righteousness. We know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. D.B. loved the Lord and was obedient to Him. He was always quiet in his demeanor and faithful to the end to his wife and companion of 61 years. D.B. loved and supported his two children with strong encouragement to make decisions and was always there when a discussion was needed. He found joy in his daughter in law and grandchildren."
Mr. Donald B. "D.B." Franklin passed away Wednesday morning, June 27, in Signal Mountain, Tenn., after a long illness, as a complication of a stroke.
D.B. was born September 20, 1918, to Darwin Benjamin and Fannie Tarver Franklin. He was the surviving brother of D. Olin, Samuel and Chalmers Franklin. He grew up in the Clito Community, attending public schools in Statesboro, and graduating from Statesboro High School. He later attended Georgia Teachers College. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
D.B. retired from the Statesboro Telephone Company after 35 years of service as company secretary. He had been active in the Statesboro Lions Club for many years, where he was voted "Lion of The Year" and was a Mason and a member of the Ogeechee Lodge #213 F &AM. Mr. Franklin was a longtime member of the Statesboro First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Harmony Sunday School Class, a former deacon and had served on the Board of Trustees.
He was married for 61 years to Nell Barnes Franklin, until her death in 2003. He also was the father to Deborah Elaine Franklin, who died in 1952.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Franklin of Marietta; his son and daughter-in-law, Don and Julie Franklin; and his grandchildren, Don, Jim and Leslie, all of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; three nephews, Jimmy (James Burke) Franklin of Statesboro, Sammy Franklin of Clemson, S.C., and Gary Franklin of Athens, Ga., also loyal and dedicated family friends, Brenda Paulk and her family and his caregivers, Charlotte Kenemore, Janet Johnson, Leverne Johnson, Barbara Price and Sue Rogers.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Statesboro First Baptist Church with Dr. H. William Perry officiating. Interment will be in the Eastside Cemetery.
