Bio of Alice Meyers Smith Hamer

Alice Meyers Smith was born, 17 July 1863 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. She was one of three children of John Lee Smith, born 18 July 1836 in England. John married in 1862 to Mary Meyers born June 1842 in England. Mary died in June 1910 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. John died 26 May 1937 in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Alice married George Frederick Hamer on the 1 February 1888 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. George was a well known composer of music and was a music teacher.

They were the proud parents of seven children, they were all born in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

1. Harold Hamer was born 30 July 1890 and died 4 February 1892 in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
2. Ruth Hamer was born 11 July 1893 and died 1 October 1893 in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
3. Elizabeth "Betty" Hamer was born 27 August 1894 and died 20 December 1973 in Methuen, Massachusetts.
4. Lillon Hamer was born 4 July 1896 and died 20 December 1981 in Palm Beach County, Florida.
5. George Frederick Hamer, Jr. was born 17 June 1900 and died February 1983 in New Castle, New Hampshire.
6. Helen Claire Hamer was born May 1903 and died 21 October 1987 in Fairmont, West Virginia.
7. Charlotte Hamer was born 4 November 1905 and died 11 March 1992 in Catskill, New York.

Alice died on the 20 August 1935 in the Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Her husband, George died on the 2 October in Methuen, Massachusetts. They both are buried in the Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence, Massachusetts in Section 1 Lot 20.

Obituary of Mrs. George F. Hamer

Mrs. George F. Hamer

Mrs. Alice M. (Smith) Hamer, 72 died yesterday afternoon at the Lawrence General Hospital, after a short illness. She was the wife of George F. Hamer, composer-pianist. They made their home at 115 Lawrence Street, Methuen.

Mrs. Hamer was born in Lawrence and made her home here until one year ago, when she moved to Methuen. She was a member of Trinity Congregational church.

Besides her husband, deceased is survived by a son, George F. Hamer, Jr. of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania; four daughters, Mrs. Z. William Colson of Methuen, Mrs. Mahlon H. Atkinson and Mrs. Gilbert M. Seaman of Catskill, New York, and Mrs. Clyde Lemuel Colson of Atlanta, Georgia; her father John L. Smith; two sisters, Florence Smith and Mrs. Bertha Herrick, both of this city, and eight grandchildren.

The body was removed to the funeral chapel of Undertaker-Frederick E. Allen.

The funeral will be held from there Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock with services by Rev. George F. Beecher, pastor of the First-Calvary Baptist church. Interment will be in Harmony Grove cemetery at Salem.

NOTE: The obituary states Alice was buried in the Harmony Grove cemetery at Salem. After researching and it was confirmed with the Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence, Massachusetts, she is buried with her husband, Prof. George F. Hamer, daughter, Mrs. Elisabeth "Betty" Hamer Colson and Elisabeth husband, Dr. Z. William Colson. They are all buried in Section 1 Lot 20.
