In the 1880 census of Gwinnett County we found Mrs. Emily Dyer (wife of Bluford) age 59 housekeeper. John A. age 21, farmer; Emagine age 17, Irvin B. 14 working on farm. Annie Hudgins, age 23, School Teacher [Boarding].

Shortly after 1880 John and Anna were married. About the time that A.A. Dyer his brother moved to Stanton, Alabama, John moved to an area in Alabama called Mellow Valley in Clay County near Craigford, located ten miles southeast of Ashland, Alabama. Ann Hudgins was raised around Auburn, AL. She was teaching school in Gwinnet County, GA and boarding at the home of Mrs. Emily Dyer when she and John were married.

After moving to Mellow Valley, AL, John and Anna both taught school. They built a home there and began raising a family when John became ill with pneumonia and died at age 36 in 1896.

Anna Hudgins Dyer married a Mr. Willoughby [also a teacher] and for a while they lived near Boaz, AL, before moving back to the area where Irvin Buford Dyer, her brother-in-law, lived. Several of the children of John and Anna were educated at Snead College close to Boaz and Albertville, AL.

John's middle initial was "A". It is not known what John's middle initial stands for, but two possibilities occur:

John's dad Bluford had three brothers, Alexander, Alfred, and Allen. John's oldest brother was named Alfred Alexander, so it is likely that John's middle name was "Allen" after his uncle.

Another possibility is that John's daughter, Vera, gave one of her sons the middle name of "Arell" [pronounced R. L.]... so that is a possibility.

John's grandson, John Francis Dyer, said that his grandfather, John A., had gotten up from his sick bed [Pneumonia] to help neighbors fight a forest fire in their community and died as result of this activity.
