Mr. Straight was a ragtime composer and pianist (and piano roll recording artist) who has a certain level of fame.

As his style of music waned in popularity he took a day job as a water sampler with the Metropolitan Sanitary District (Chicago). Tragically, as he was working over a manhole on the evening of September 22, 1940, he was struck and killed by a passing car.
