Sarah Jane and Jesse Wright decided to join a wagon train to California in 1852, when their daughter, Elizabeth, was only two years old. Jesse was hale and hearty when they started but he caught fever on the way NearSweetwater Crossing, Wyoming, he died and was buried. When the wagon
train reached the high Sierra Nevada Mountains covered with snow, Sarah went into labor. The wagon train of migrants anxious to reach California and establish new homes left Sarah and Elizabeth all alone. However, one old man refused to leave. He saved the life of Sarah, Elizbeth, and the
new baby, Ellen Sierra Nevada Wright. His name is not known.
In 1954, Sarah and her two daughters returned to Indiana by way of the Isthmus of Panama and two ocean voyages. The stayed there for two years.
In 1956, Sarah and her two daughters joined a wagon train and again crossed the prairie on the same route as the first time. Sarah brought a marble stone which she placed on the grave of her husband, Jesse Wright.
A lengthy article about Sarah Jane Carr appeared in The Humboldt Times, Eureka, Humboldt County, California,
She died on January 1, 1925, ten days before her 101st birthday.
