Journalist, politician and diplomat. Hale, son of journalist Nathan Hale and grand-nephew to the patriot Nathan Hale, was a journalist and literary writer. He founded the short lived "To-Day: a Boston Literary Journal" in 1852, was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1855, served as consul-general in Egypt 1864 to 1870, was elected to the Massachusetts Senate in 1871, and served as US Assistant Secretary of State under Secretary Hamilton Fish 1872 to 1873. His notable siblings include authors Lucretia Peabody Hale, Edward Everett Hale and Susan Hale.
