ROBERT HALL SAFFORD
Army Brigadier General
Robert Hall Safford, 76, a retired Army brigadier general who was twice wounded in action and decorated for gallantry in World War II, died of pneumonia Jan. 25 at Holy Cross Hospital.
Gen. Safford was a native of Leominster, Mass. He was a 1936 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned in the field artillery.
During World War II, he served as an infantry battalion commander in Europe. His postwar assignments included duty as an assistant professor at West Point and as chief of staff of the 101st Airborne Division. His last post was as an artillery brigade commander.
He retired from active duty in 1970 and had lived in Silver Spring since then.
His military decorations included the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and two awards of the Distinguished Service Medal.
He was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Silver Spring.
His first wife, Edith Muller Safford, died in 1969.
