He was a right handed pitcher making his debut for the St. Louis Browns on September 30, 1937. For twelve seasons, he played with the St. Louis Browns (1937, 1939, 1941-47), Cleveland Indians (1948), Chicago Cubs (1949) and New York Yankees (1951). In 1944 he was elected to the All-Star team, was a member of the 1948 Cleveland Indians World Series Championship and the New York Yankees 1951 World Series Championship. He finished his career with a record of 80 wins, 82 loss, 67 complete games, 11 shutouts, 9 saves, 525 strikouts and a 3.80 earned run average.
