Helen Ann Smith, of Evergreen and formerly of Clarkston, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008.
Helen was born to Eugene and Bertha Tweedy Aug. 18, 1919, at the Godwin family homestead in Red Fir, near Kooskia. She attended elementary school at Tahoe Ridge, where her parents settled on a farm. She graduated from Kooskia High School.
She met Richard Smith in 1939, and they were married Nov. 2, 1940, at Grangeville. They lived in the Kooskia area until 1949, when they moved to Headquarters, where he worked as a mechanic for Potlatch Corp. until his death in 1965. She taught 4-H for more than 14 years and was active as a church and community leader. After the death of her husband, she worked at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.
She later moved to Walla Walla, where she worked for Mary Drake Day Care, and later opened and ran her own day care center for more than 14 years. After her retirement she moved to Evergreen to be near her youngest son, where she lived the rest of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard, of 24 years; and her sister Oma Abell.
She is survived by two sisters, Irma Abell of Lewiston, and Mary Lorentzen of Clarkston; two brothers, John Tweedy of Kettle Falls, Wash., and Joseph Tweedy of St. Maries; three daughters, Patricia Nelson of Olympia, Virginia Kantola of St. Maries, and Anna Speakman of Booneville, Ark.; and two sons, Richard Smith of Evergreen, and Vernon Smith of Battle Ground, Wash. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
In honor of her wishes, she will be cremated and in the spring will be buried alongside her husband on Tahoe Ridge. A memorial will be planned at that time.
