~1st Wife - Rebecca Catherine Sorrells. Married on March 8, 1852. They had 5 children: William, Joseph, Jane (Mitchell), Sarah (Presley), and Margaret (Presley)
~2nd Wife - Catherine Chambers. Married on November 13, 1873. They had 4 children: John Jr, Jeremiah, Mary (Huffman), and Julia
Mr. Dyer served as a wagon driver in the 62nd North Carolina Regiment, "Turpins Infantry", during the Civil War. During the war, he suffered a head injury after being thrown from a horse & he had smallpox which caused him to go blind in his right eye.
He died of a heart attack. Supposedly his hair & beard were so long, they had to cut it before they placed him in the coffin, as told by Martha Dyer Haney. My great Aunt, Martha Dyer Haney also stated that she was with "Stamey" on the front porch when he had a heart attack while sitting in his rocking chair on the front porch.
