Joseph Clay
Birth: Oct. 16, 1741
Death: Nov. 15, 1804

US Continental Congressman. Born in Yorkshire, England, he immigrated to the United States in 1760 and settled in Savannah, Georgia. There he engaged in the general commission business, was elected a member of the council of safety and was delegate to the Provisional Congress in 1775. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Major in the Georgia Line of the Continental Army and also as a Colonel deputy paymaster general for Georgia. In 1878, he was elected to the Continental Congress but did not attend due to his military commitments. After the war, he was the original trustee of Franklin College Georgia, elected Treasurer of Georgia in 1782 and was a judge of the United States Court for the District of Georgia, (1786-1801). He died at age 63 in Savannah, Georgia. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
