HERBERT W. III (CHIPS)
Popular Miami trial lawyer Herbert W. (Chips)Virgin, III, died the evening of November 4 after a long illness. He was born December 2, 1935 in Madison, Wisconsin, and moved with the Virgin family shortly thereafter to Pensacola, FL, then to Miami. He attended Ponce de Leon Junior High School thru 1951, was a graduate of Coral Gables Senior High School in 1953, honored as Wheel Club officer of the year. He attended Duke University and obtained a BA in 1957. HE was a member of the Sigma Chi Social Fraternity. He married Jean Elder in July 1955, moved to Miami and attended the University of Miami Marine Biology School where he was President of the Moot Court and Director of the Law Review. He has been married to Nancy Peterson for the last 27 years having remarried December 19, 1969. He has been a member of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, Coral Reef Yacht Club, Committee of 100, Riviera Country Club, Board of Trustees and Pro Bono attorney for the Greater Miami Youth Symphony, and an extremeky active member of the sailing commuunity. He was a competitive racer in X-Dinghies, Lightenings, Southeasters, and Star Class Racing boats representing the United States at the World Cup in Italy in 1986. He is survived by his loving wife Nancy; mother Frances T. Virgin; brother Charles E. Virgin, M.D.; sister Frances V. (Betsy) Owen. Sons Herbert W. IV, M.D., John E., Gregory S., Scott G.; and daughter Karen. Grandchildren Audrey M. Waple, Brett W., Herbert W. V, Grant W. Virgin.
Having raced sailing yachts around the world in earlier years his most recent competitive sailboat is the J41, Main Bear. Memorial Services will be held at Christ The King Lutheran Church on Thursday, 4 PM, 11295 S. W. 57th Ave., Miami, FL, 644-5063. A memorial service for the members of the sailing community will be held at Coral Reef Yacht Club, 2485 S. Bayshore Dr., Coconut Grove, Friday at 5 PM, 858-1733. His ashes will be scattered over the Gulf Stream in a traditional family ceremony Saturday morning.
