US Diplomat. Served as United States Minister to China from 1880 to 1881, and United States Minister to Turkey from 1897 to 1898. Also served as Editor of the Princeton Journal from 1860 to 1866, President of the University of Vermont from 1866 to 1871, and President of the University of Michigan from 1871 to 1880, and 1881 to 1897.
