Served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 11th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers and Major General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". After the end of the conflict he served as the Attorney General of Michigan from 1867 to 1868, and was elected to represent Michigan's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1869 to 1873.
