Figure Skater. A former American ice dancing champion and an internationally respected figure skating judge, he and his wife Louisa perished in the 1961 plane crash in Berg, Belgium (near Brussels) which took the lives of 16 additional members of the United States Figure Skating Team on their way to the World Championships in Prague. He was a five-time American ice dancing champion; in 1937 and 1938, he won the gold medal with partner Nettie Prantel. Skating with Sandy Macdonald, Harold was the American ice dancing champion in 1939, 1940 and 1941. Although his competitive career ended at the 1944 United States Nationals in Minneapolis (skating with partner Kathe Mehl, he received a silver medal), His devotion to the sport continued as he assumed new roles as a figure skating judge and mentor in the sport he loved. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, he was posthumously inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1981. (bio by: Steven John)
