RIRIE - James Ephriam McMurtrey, 81, of Ririe, a farmer, died March 11, 1996, at Good Samaritan Care Center of complications related to Parkinson's disease.
He was born Sept. 21, 1914, at Antelope, to Clarence Marian and Mabel Sophia Scott McMurtrey. He attended school at Clark and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He was a farmer in the Poplar and in the Roberts areas, and also worked for various potato warehouses and at the Sugar Factory in Lincoln.
On May 29, 1939, he married Wanda Ruth Wheeler. Their marriage was later solemnized in an LDS Temple. She died May 5, 1993. He married Gladys Brown on April 16, 1994, and this marriage was solemnnized in an LDS Temple.
He was an active member of the LDS Church, and he and his wife served in the Florida Talahassee Mission. He enjoyed being with people and was actively involved in the early efforts to establish the Senior Citizens Center in Ririe.
Survivors include his wife of Ririe; his son, Arnold Eph McMurtrey of Shelton; his daughter, Mrs. Leo (Darlene) Selman of Lewisville; a grandson, Kelly Dean McMurtrey of Seattle, whom he and his first wife raised; two brothers, Alma McMurtrey of Ririe, and Billy McMurtrey of Arco; a sister, Alta Campbell of Annis; a stepson, Marion Bledsoe of Pocatello; two stepdaughters, June Caldwell and LaRaine Larsen of Pocatello; six grandchildren; 15 stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 18 stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and a stepson.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Ririe LDS Stake Center with Bishop Reed Larson officiating. The family will meet with friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby, and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Ririe Shelton Cemetery.
