Oct. 23, 1874. / Of vigorous mind, sound heart, strong faith, / and inflexible purpose, uniting the / meekness of wisdom with the most / ardent love for God and man, he laid / down his life, laboring to the end, / in the spirit of his master. / The last words spoken by him in St. Paul's / Alexr Va, when he had been consecrated / Bishop, tell the story of his life. / E'r since, by faith, I saw the dream, / Thy flowing wounds supply, / Redeeming love has been my theme / And shall be, till I die. [According to online sources, "Cavalla" was the name of Bishop Payne's home, originally built in Cavalla, Liberia; following the death of the bishop's wife Anna, the bishop apparently had the home dismantled, shipped to Virginia, and rebuilt there.]
