Dee-Dee, My Sweet Little Chihuahua
Dee-Dee was given to me when she was a tiny puppy. She was 6 weeks and was the tiniest puppy of the litter.
My husband and I were newlyweds when she came into our lives. Of course we just gave her all our love and took her every where with us. Dee-Dee went with us when we visited family and friends, visits to the beach, park, camping, canoeing, traveling or just walking. She enjoyed herself, and would walk by my side unless I was carrying her; which I often did especially in the winter with her wrapped in a blanket. Her little head remained uncovered so she could see everything.
Everyone loved Dee-Dee, she would just pull on your heart strings with her silly antics. She loved chasing balls and had a little ball (the kind that children played jacks with), being the perfect size for her to carry in her mouth. She would take the ball to you to throw for her and off she would go chasing the ball as fast as her little legs could carry her. She especially loved playing ball with my Dad, he would sit on the floor with his back against the sofa to play with her. She would take the ball to him the first time and he would throw the ball and it would bounce and roll into the dining room with her chasing the ball. She would bring the ball back to him and drop it on the floor, as soon as my Dad reached for the ball she would scoop it up with her mouth and run under the sofa. She would stick her head out with the ball in her mouth and when he would reach for the ball she would duck back under the sofa, they would do this several times. After a while my Dad would ignore her and she would finally come out with the ball and place it on the floor next to my Dad so he could throw the ball again. This routine would be repeated numerous times. Dad didn't seem to tire of playing with her.
One evening we were watching television, we had two children by then, I was holding my son, my husband was holding our daughter and Dee-Dee was laying on the sofa against my leg. We heard loud voices as though some people were yelling or arguing in front of our house. My husband looked out the window, it had darkened and my husband could not see much so he opened the door to go out. Dee-Dee jumped off the sofa before I could grab her and ran out the door. She had never done this before, my husband ran out after her. The people that were yelling had crossed the street, Dee-Dee ran into the street after them and was hit by a car. The lady who hit Dee-Dee stopped her car and apologized though it wasn't her fault. My sweet little Dee-Dee died instantly.
I cried so many tears over Dee-Dee, I loved her so much. It was many years before I could get another pet. Dee-Dee was buried in our back yard, we no longer live where she is buried. When ever I pass the house where I once lived, I look at the house and think of Dee-Dee, my sweet little much loved pet. She truly was a member of our family.
