He was a detective with the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency and was involved in the violent conflicts that occurred in the coal fields of West Virginia during the attempts to unionize the mines. While in McDowell County, West Virginia, he met and married Nora Virginia Caldwell Ferree, a widow with four daughters. They had one daughter, Ethel Felts Wade. Her middle name was in honor of Alsaberry Wade's employer, the Baldwin-Felts agency. Soon Alsaberry moved on, divorcing Nora. In 1945 he married Anna Wells Bishop,a widow with several children. Anna was hard-working, patient, kind, and a great stand-in grandmother. They lived in her house in Riner, Virginia until his death.
