Abner enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 21 april 1861 at Franklin, Alabama. He was mustered as a private in Company K, 61st Alabama Infantry. Abner was missing a Battle of Wincester, Virginia on 19 September 1864. Burial location was probably where he died on the battle field.
