Funeral Services Sunday Afternoon For S. T. Cowan
S. T. Cowan, 82, a resident of the Laurens community for 54 years, died Friday afternoon at Hovenden Memorial Good Samaritan home. He had been ill for some time.
Final rites were at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Laurens Methodist church, with the Rev. R. P. Phillips officiating. A quartet composed of Mrs. Amos Hertz, Mrs. Fred Forsythe, Henry Roewe and Clarence Morgan sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "I'll Take My Vacation in Heaven." Mrs. H. M. Pohlman was accompanist.
Pallbearers were Robert Dubbert, Ronnie Cowan and Byron Aschenbrenner of Laurens, Harley Whitfield of Des Moines, and Richard Workman and Merle Johnson of Spencer.
Born in 1871
Shields Townsend Cowan was the son of Robert and Mary Cowan of Tama county. Born 03 Nov 1871, he was educated in the rural schools of Tama county, at Leander Clark college in Toledo, and at Tobin School of Commerce at Fort Dodge.
On March 28, 1894, he was united in marriage with Ella E. Stevenson, also of Tama County. They were the parents of six children. One son, James Robert, died in infancy. In 1900 Mr. and Mrs. Cowan moved to Pocahontas county, locating on a farm northeast of Laurens, and in 1917 they moved to the family farm south of Laurens.
Mr. Cowan united with the Salem Presbyterian church in Tama county. His membership was transferred later to the Methodist church in Laurens.
Survivors include two daughters, Laura (Mrs. E. E. Dubbert of Laurens) and Iram (Mrs. Allen) Whitfield of Des Moines; three sons, John T. Cowan, Elmer E. Cowan and Leonard J. Cowan, all of Laurens; two brothers, Robert Cowan of Wessington Springs, S.D., and Herbert Cowan of Mason City; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. His wife died in 1950.
Among those from a distance attending the funeral were Robert Cowan and Jack Anton of Wessington Springs, S. D.; Herbert Cowan of Mason City; Weir Stevenson and Mr. and Mrs. James Stevenson, Traer; Mr. and Mrs. Robert McGowan, Renwick; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Workman and Dr. and Mrs. Merle K. Johnson, Spencer; and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Musgrave and Mr. and Mrs. Allen Whitfield, Des Moines.
