James Thomas Gilliam
James Thomas "Jim" Gilliam, age 74, of Joplin, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Freeman Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Jim was born on Jan. 28, 1937, in Duenweg, Mo., the son of the late Troy T. and Marie (Caudle) Gilliam.
He has been a lifetime area resident.
He was a graduate of Duenweg High School in 1954.
After graduation he worked for Ulmer Funeral Home. He then worked for R&S Motors as a parts runner. He also worked for Myers Motors from 1956 to 1959. He worked for Atlas Powder Company later called ICI for 33 years, staying on even after the plant's closing to remove acid lines and tanks. From 1999 to 2002, he worked for U.S. Securities. For the past 10 years he worked as a funeral associate for Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
He coached Little League baseball in Duenweg and Joplin, for over 19 years.
He was a member of the Joplin Elks Club No. 501, the Masonic Lodge 335 AF & AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Joplin and the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Temple, Springfield, Mo., and the Joplin Shrine Club.
He was an avid Nascar fan and a loyal Cardinal baseball fan.
He married Sandra "Sue" Atkins on Dec. 27, 1958, in Miami, Okla. She survives.
Also surviving is his son, David Gilliam and wife, Teresa, Joplin; two sisters, Imogene Elmore, Sapulpa, Okla., and Doris Bernard, Hammond, La.; two granddaughters, Rachelle' Bishop and husband, Seth, Carl Junction, Mo., and Brittany Gilliam, Tulsa, Okla.; and two great-grandsons, Braxton and Brayden Bishop.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Brock.
Jim loved his family and was very proud of their accomplishments. He was truly a wonderful grandad. His sense of humor, quick wit and friendship will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. James B. Lankford will officiate.
Burial will be in Stone Cemetery.
The pallbearers will be Howard Reding, Greg Johnson, Rick Wolfe, Mark Fowler, Seth Bishop and Bruce Woodard.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel.
At Jim's request in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Shriner's Hospital in care of the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
