The daughter of Needles Police Chief Robert E.Ford was killed instantly early yesterday morning when the car in which she was riding crashed into an embankment near Needles.
Dead is Janice Ford,18, who was thrown from the auto when it went out of control on River Rd.abiut three miles from Needles.
The death car and the badly injured driver were discovered at 5:50 a.m..,about 3 1/2 hours after the crash, according to California Highway Patrolman Paul B. Shults.
Driver Dwayne T. Canon,21,was found semiconcious behind the wheel by Clifford Johnson of Needles.
The injured man,a Santa Fe Railway brakeman stationed in Needles, has been taken to the Santa Fe Hospital in Los Angeles, where his condition is described as critical.
Canon was covered with mud an apparently was thrown from the vehicle also, Shults said.
Shults said Canon apparently drifted onto the right shoulder as he came around a corner, then lost control when he over-corrected. The car plunged off the right side of the road and crashed head-on into a dirt embackment. The 1957 model vehicle was completely demolished,he said.
In addition to Chief Ford, the girl is survived by her mother Mildred;sister Jerry,12 and a brother Larry,20.
Miss Ford was a student, and during the past summer had been employed by the City Recreaction Department in Needles
