Born in the home of his maternal grandparents John and Clara Dorsey Burke, a few weeks later Virgil's mother Leatha Burke McAllister traveled with her baby to a homestead near the Hart River in Grant County, North Dakota to join with her husband Roscoe McAllister and Roscoe's parents Henry Frank and Catherine McAllister. After 7 years the homestead failed and they moved back to Indiana. They lived in Reelsville, Indiana for a few years and eventually moved to Greensburg where Virgil graduated high school. He attended Taylor University for a semester and a half till the money ran out and the Great Depression forced him to quit school.
Virgil married Vernon Dailey and had 2 daughters, Barbara (Brobst) and Mary Sue (Werbel). Vernon and Virgil divorced.
Virgil's mother, Leatha McAllister, operated a beauty shop over the McLellans five and dime in Kokomo, Indiana. One of her customers was a young woman who worked in McLellans Marguerite Haywood. Leatha introduced the two and they were married December 31, 1944. There were two boys from that marriage, David Wayne and Donald Leroy McAllister.
Virgil worked at Delco Remy for a short time (75 cents per hour), he was a milkman, and had various day jobs during the Depression. He retired from the Anderson, Indiana Post Office in 1968. Virgil was a poet, very active in his church, a sharp dresser and wordsmith, and a charter member of Chief Anderson Toastmasters Club 715 in 1949.
