Biography. Morris married Elizabeth Derr on October 22, 1847, in Hopewell, Ontario, New York. Together they had Lorada (1849), Lucretia (1852), William (1853), Clarissa (1855) Fidelia (1860), and Nellie (1865). As a young child, Clarissa became deaf due to Scarlet Fever. As a result, the entire family became fluent in sign language--even great-nieces and nephews.

Morris was the youngest of the eleven children born to Roby Penn (born in Maryland and died in New York) and Lucretia Howes (of the same). His siblings were Clarissa, Ann, John, Elvira, Mary, Charles, Mehetable, William, Lorada, and Fidelia. This Penn lineage was cousin to the famous Quaker William Penn sharing a common set of great...grandparents. In every descending generation, the name William was honored through use.

In 1863, Morris was drafted to serve in the Civil War under Captain R. Strickland. Although he was married, he qualified for the Michigan draft because he was under the age of 45. He had to leave for war following the second death of one of his children. This meant that in addition to running the farm, Elizabeth, his wife, in her grief had to single-parent two children under the age of fourteen, a deaf eight-year-old, and a toddler. He and Elizabeth were married 52 years.
