Salem N.Y. Press May 18, 1999--H. Hilton Barrett, a former Schuylerville resident, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at the Fort Hudson Nursing Home. Funeral services were private at the convenience of the family with burial in the Bacon Hill Cemetery.
H. Hilton Barrett who was born in Galway, February 1, 1915, the son of Howard D. Barrett and Estella (Armer) Barrett. He graduated from Galway High School in 1932 and attended a Teacher Training class at Cobleskill. In 1933, he accepted a position as a teacher in Fulton County at a yearly salary of $760. In 1936, he attended the Normal School at Oneonta. In 1941, he entered the State Teachers College at Buffalo.
On December 21, 1941, he married Dorothy Sherman of Ballston Spa. His education was interrupted on March 12, 1942, when he was inducted into military service. He became a member of the 110th Infantry, 28th Division, in which he served as top sergeant. He went to France in July 1944 and took part in the campaign at St. Lo. He was with troops that entered Paris. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, was captured by Germans, and imprisoned on December 21, 1944. He was liberated by the English on April 28, 1945. After his honorable discharge on September 14, 1946, he returned to Saratoga County where he organized and directed the Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency.
Mr. Barrett returned to State Teachers College and received his BS degree in June 1947 and accepted a position as grade supervisor at Schuylerville. In 1952, he received his MS degree, cum laude, from the State University at Buffalo.
In 1966, he moved into the new elementary school which he helped design as principal of grades kindergarten through three, in which position he served until retiring in June of 1971.
Mr. Barrett was active in community affairs as president of the Old Saratoga Club, chairman of the Red Cross Fund Drive, member of the American Legion, 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, teacher and superintendent of the United Methodist Church of Schuylerville, and member of the educators Saddle and Chowder Group.
He loved to fish and hunt. He served as secretary-treasurer of the Schuyler League. He drove truck for Joe Sulli's grocery store after retirement. He loved antique cars, restoring and driving them. An avid gardener, he enjoyed the reputation among his friends as the "man who makes those delicious pickles."
He was pre-deceased by his son, Bill, in 1983 and his brother Ralph, in 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Schuylerville; his daughter, Elizabeth Barrett of Hudson Falls and a brother, Norman Barrett of Galway.
