A native of Toronto, Ontario, Atkinson played the position of Right Wing for teams in the NHL, WHA, NAHL, OHASR, AHL, CHL, and OHA hockey leagues. At 6'00, and 172lbs, he played for the Niagara Falls Flyers from 1964 to 1968, Boston Bruins from 1968 to 1969, Oklahoma City Blazers from 1968 to 1969, Buffalo Sabres from 1970 to 1974, Washington Capitals from 1974 to 1975, Richmond Robins from 1974 to 1975, Toronto Toros from 1975 to 1976, Buffalo Norsemen from 1975 to 1976, Brantford Foresters from 1976 to 1978, and the Eries Blades from 1976 to 1977. Atkinson was selected by the Detroit Red Wings round 1 #6 overall in the 1966 NHL Entry Draft and was chosen Rookie of the Year for 1968 to 1969. He retired from hockey in 1978. Atkinson passed away from a heart attack in May 2003 at the age of 54.
