Birth: 1856, France
Death: unknown

The eldest of three children born to General Philip Kearny and his second wife, the former Agnes Maxwell, Susan Watts Kearny was the wife of Lt. Commander J. Russell Selfridge, USN. Named after her paternal grandmother, (an earlier namesake from Kearny's first marriage had died in infancy in 1843), "Suzy" was born in Paris, where her as yet unmarried parents had taken up residence to escape the gossip and censure of New York society. Her early childhood was spent at Bellegrove, the general's opulent country estate in present-day Kearny, NJ, with her mother and younger siblings Archie and Virginia. In 1862, at the age of six, she suffered a double loss: her little brother to typhoid, then her father to a Confederate bullet at Chantilly. A half dozen years later her mother married the distinguished Admiral John H. Upshur, USN, a widower with several children, and Suzy, then twelve, became part of the American naval community. Both she and her younger sister married navy officers from prominent families, her husband being the son of the celebrated Commodore Selfridge, USN. A wife, mother, and Gilded Age socialite, she remained driven by the need to know and honor the heroic father she scarcely remembered, Kearny having been away fighting, first in Italy and then in Virginia, for three of the six years their lives coincided. Immersing herself in the details of his life and career, she gave lectures, attended veterans' events, and funded memorials across the country in his name. (BIO TEMPORARILY INCOMPLETE)
