Mary was born in Owingsville, Bath Co., Kentucky. Her father David was shot and killed when she was a young child and she along with a couple of siblings were sent to live in the Masonic Widows and Orphans home in Jefferson Co., Kentucky as her mother was unable to care for such a large family.
