| Birth: | May 18, 1912 | | Death: | May 5, 2003 | Anti-apartheid activist. Born the same year as the African National Congress, he worked along with Nelson Mandella and Oliver Tambo to try and right the wrongs of apartheid. His efforts led to him being arrested and convicted in 1964 of plotting anti-government sabotage in a trial that showed the world the extent of South Africa's racial discrimination. Under international pressure, the judge sentenced Sisulu and his co-defendants to life in prison instead of death. Released over 25 years later, he was instumental in negotiating the final end to apartheid and preparing the ANC to lead the nation of South Africa. (bio by: Ron Moody)
