Jorgen Jensen Svane (Swaner) and his family left Liverpool, England, January 7, 1855. They traveled on the ship "James Nesmith" under the leadership of Peter Olsen Hansen. They arrived in New Orleans, February 23, 1855

Peter Olsen Hansen wrote in his journal details about their journey, including the death of each Scandinavian Immigrant. On Monday January 29, he wrote: "On Monday we buried another child 9 years old". This was young Meriam Swaner.
