A native of San Francisco, Alioto graduated from St. Mary's College in Moraga, California in 1937 before going to Washington D.C. to study law at Catholic University. Graduating in 1940, he briefly worked as an antitrust lawyer for the Department of Justice and on the Board of Economic Welfare before returning to San Francisco to open his own law office. In 1948 he was appointed to the San Francisco Board of Education until 1954, and would serve as President from 1953 until 1954. In 1968 he was elected the 33rd Mayor of San Francisco, serving until 1976. In 1974 he made an unsuccessful campaign for Governor of California. After leaving office, he returned to practicing law until his death at the age of 81. He was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma and a cenotaph in his honor can be found in neighboring Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. (bio by: G.Photographer)
