John Tannahill was born in 1845 to William Tannahill and Janette White in Huntingdon, Quebec. His parents moved to Iowa in 1855. His father enlisted in 1860 in the Civil War. After his father departed for the war, John was "the head of the household" as he was 15 yrs. old. When his father left she had 7 children to care for and one coming and a mortgage on the farm. John hauled wood in town in the winter to get a little money for their needs. On Feb. 18, 1865 John enlisted in the army. he was only 17 at the time but they needed men so bad they did not investigate age closely and also paid a bounty to anyone who would enlist. he paid off the mortage iith that money and 6 mos. later the war ended. he was in the 156th Regiment, Co.C, Illinois Infanty. He was mustered out in memphis, kTenn. on Sep. 17, 1865. He married Juliette Josephine Bowlsby in Jan. 8,1870 in Chickasaw Co., Iowa. They had three little girls, Jenniger Melissa, Lillian Annabelle, and Minnie Louise. When Minnie was 3 yrs. old. Her mother died when she fell into a well that had been left uncovered. He married Emma Francis Wise, three years later on Jan 29, 1885. They had two children of their own; Artemesis, and Mary Eloise. When Eloise was eight years old they moved to Willowbrook,Saskatchewan where John filed a homestead. When John died he was first buried on the Meays Homestead but was later moved to the Willowbrook Covenant Church Cemetery
