Max Gerald Coons March 10, 1918-August 27, 2007 Resident of Walnut Creek Preceded in death by Marjorie, his first wife of 45 years, and by Margaret Saylor, his second wife of 17 years, and by his son Douglas, Max was father of Steve Coons (Ann) of Chico, Greg Coons (Teresa) of Alamo, and Debbie Freeman (Stuart) of Kingsburg, CA; step-father of Kathie Tompkins (John) of Cupertino, and Susie Armocido (David) of Colusa. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Max was born in Gothenburg, NB, and raised in David City, NB. He graduated from Doane College where he met Marjorie and played football and golf. During WWII, he served in the US Navy at Great Lakes as a drill instructor and at Mare Island as a physical therapist. Over the years he was a YMCA director, a junior high teacher, and an insurance agent. He was a founding member of Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, a Kiwanian, a Mason and a Shriner.
He enjoyed golf and ballroom dancing, and shared his love of the out of doors, sports, gardening, fishing, humor, faith, and friendships. His family learned a wonderful sense of "play" from him. Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service on Friday, September 14, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Dr., Lafayette. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1060 La Avenida St., Mountain View, CA 94043.
