He then married Sarah Melinda Carothers on 22 December 1857 at Shelby County. The couple had 2 sons while in Shelby: James Michael and John Calvin Heckart.
Michael and his second family went west, eventually settling in Oregon. He was a millwright, carpenter and later, a farmer.
