She attended the University of Texas, where she met Zachary Scott, who was an up and coming actor. She married Scott in 1935 and with him had a daughter named Waverly, born in 1936. They divorced in 1950 when Scott became more involved in Hollywood. On December 28, 1950, she married author John Steinbeck, and was married to him until his death on December 20, 1968. She became one of his biggest supporters for over 35 years, even after his death, editing a volume of his poems and showing off his awards to reporters. She became involved in stage productions after moving to New York in 1939, becoming a stage manager for the plays "Oklahoma" in 1943, and "Othello" starring Paul Robeson.
